Smarter Urban Dynamics in Ireland

The Smarter Urban Dynamics (SUD) team at the IBM Research - Ireland focuses on developing analytics and tools to better understand and optimize the urban dynamics. This team develops research around three areas:
• Leveraging digital traces from mobile devices to gain an insight in why, how and when we travel. Using this information, mobility demand can be predicted and transport resource capacity accordingly allocated, offline or in real-time.

Loop City - Danish developement collaboration

Loop City is a collaboration between 10 municipalities, the Capital Region and the Danish State on urban and business development along the Ring 3 light rail. The collaboration partners are the Capital Region, Ministry of Transport, Danish Business Authority, and 10 municipalities. Loop City is a unique Danish example of collaborative, strategic urban management. Its goal is to realise the significant opportunities for urban and business development that the new Ring 3 infrastructure paves the way for.

Tesla Virtual Power Plant

Tesla is partnering with South Australia’s Labor government to create the world’s largest virtual power plant, consisting of 50,000 homes fitted with solar panels and the company’s Powerwall 2 home battery unit. The $800 million project will have roughly six times more energy storage capacity than Tesla’s massive Powerpack farm at the Hornsdale wind farm near Jamestown.

Amazon Workplace Rainforest

Amazon opened a rainforest-like office space in Seattle that it hopes will spark new ideas for employees. Company office towers and high-end eateries have taken the place of warehouses and parking lots in Seattle’s South Lake Union district. The Spheres complex, officially open to workers on Tuesday, is the pinnacle of a decade of development here. The Spheres’ three glass domes house some 40,000 plants of 400 species. Amazon, famous for its demanding work culture, hopes the Spheres’ lush environs will let employees reflect and have chance encounters, spawning new products or plans.

Environmental Parameters monitor in Santander

SMART SANTANDER project, which has been developed by several companies and institutions including Telefonica I+D and University of Cantabria, aims at designing, deploying and validating in Santander and its environment a platform composed of sensors, actuators, cameras and screens to offer useful information to citizens. 750 Waspmotes have been deployed to monitor different parameters such as noise, temperature, luminosity and CO.

Living Streets Community Project in Milton Keynes

The Living Streets Community Project is funded by the European Commission’s Life programme. The project will temporarily transform streets into community areas with space for neighbours and families to socialise.
The 'living street project' is when residents convert their street from a road into an attractive area that people can meet, grow plants and flowers, create an entertainment space and share food.
