Roerplein Pocket Park

As part of the NATURVATION project, Utrecht has been examining nature-based solutions projects in the city. The Roerplein Pocket Park is one of our best examples of a successful citizen-led intervention, and began as an initiative by a local social entrepreneur to turn a paved public square into a park. The small park was built within a highly paved neighborhood with little green space, and is managed by local citizens with the support of the municipality.

Cooling white paint

Purdue University engineers have created white paint that can keep surfaces up to 18 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than their ambient surroundings – almost like a refrigerator does, but without consuming energy.

According to the researchers, the paint would replace the need for air conditioning by absorbing nearly no solar energy and sending heat away from the building. Without the building heating up, air conditioning wouldn’t have to kick on.

Beekeeping in Audi Hungaria

The idea of beekeeping originated from AUDI AG, Audi Hungaria's parent company. In 2015, Audi Hungaria was in the midst of implementing its flora and fauna protection plan thus the beekeeping idea was in line with ongoing developments, and quickly taken up by management. 6 bee colonies with 270,000 bees were installed in September 2015. The bees produce 200-240 kilograms of honey each year, which is branded as Audi Hungaria Premium Honey, and gifted to visitors, as well as purchasable in the gift shop.

Velocia app

Traffic congestion has a tremendous cost whether measured by lost productivity, environmental pollution, social equity, or just plain frustration. People keep moving to cities, but building new infrastructure is difficult and expensive.

Velocia is an app that rewards travelers for not driving alone, using resources that already exist. They place humans—rather than technology—at the center of their smart mobility solutions.
