Keep our Sand and Sea Plastic Free Campaign

A new campaign backed by tourism businesses and local municipalities is aiming to eradicate single-use plastic from coastal areas – starting with the Ayia Napa, Protaras and the wider Famagusta region of Cyprus.

The campaign, “Keep Our Sand and Sea Plastic Free”, highlights the link between single-use plastics – especially from hotels, bars, restaurants and cafes – and beach and marine litter.

Sustainable Agriculture, Food and Environment (SAFE) Platform

SAFE was created with the mindset that through strategic partnerships and the implementation of projects in Latin America, resources, and experiences dedicated to promote, design, and implement sustainability practices can be optimized and have a greater impact in transforming coffee and cocoa landscapes. Their structure allows them to work on local, national, regional, and international stages addressing the specific challenges and opportunities present at each level.

Full-power autonomous street sweeper

Finnish street maintenance technology developer Trombia Technologies has launched what it claims is the world’s first full-power autonomous, electric street sweeper in Helsinki.

The Trombia Free cleaning devices claim to use less than 15 per cent of the power required by currently available heavy suction sweeping technologies. The company is seeking to cut three million CO2 metric tons annually.

This unlocks the potential for mass-electrification and carbon-neutralisation of one of the heaviest vehicle technologies in use in cities globally.

Kuube smart bench

A Hungarian company called Kuube sells smart benches, which are equipped with USB ports, wireless chargers, and also act as a wifi hotspot. The benches are solely powered by solar energy, so thanks to the renewable energy, there is no need for a separate power supply, so the location of the installation can be chosen freely. During its operation, it constantly monitors changes in its environment: it measures temperature, UV level, air quality, humidity and air pressure, transmits the data to a server and, if necessary, notifies its owner.

RiverEdge Smart Park

River Edge Park is a vibrant, year round concert venue located along the Fox River just blocks from downtown and the train station, which boasts a river walk, bike paths and a pier. The City has committed integrating the park's infrastructure with technology to better position city officials and staff to keep track of crowds, provide better security and monitor parking security and availability. The park includes smart solutions such as smart kiosks, smart parking (lot occupancy, dynamic pricing), video analytics (crowd counting), smart lighting and wifi locations.

Our Food Future

Food is a fundamental requirement of life on this planet. However, the basic structure of today’s linear “take-make-dispose” food system is unsustainable—economically, socially and environmentally. In Guelph-Wellington, one in six families experience food insecurity, and the cost of healthy food keeps increasing. Meanwhile, between a third and a half of the food we produce is thrown away. Much of that ends up in landfill, where it creates the greenhouse gases that drive climate change.

i-Kabin

The i-Kabin is a completely off-grid solar-powered battery recharging Kiosk. Just like a village water well, where people come in the center of town to get a bucket of water for their daily usage, the i-Kabin provides electricity without the hassle of creating a village electricity grid. i-Kabins can be installed and operational in a matter of hours. At an affordable cost, customers can buy a mobile battery (the “bucket) to get access to electricity. To recharge the mobile battery (i-Pack), the user goes to the closest i-Kabin, operated by a local entrepreneur, to recharge his i-Pack.
