Smart sewer project detects virus outbreaks

The initial findings of an Israeli pilot project aimed at detecting outbreaks of Covid-19 by identifying traces of the coronavirus in the municipal sewage system have been released.

According to smart wastewater big data solutions firm Kando, preliminary results demonstrate the technology’s ability to pinpoint specifically affected neighbourhoods and hotspots. The idea is that it would provide authorities early-warning for outbreaks and data to limit isolation of areas and lockdowns – even to city street level.

OpenSAFELY

OpenSAFELY is a new secure analytics platform for electronic health records in the NHS, created to deliver urgent results during the global COVID-19 emergency. It is now successfully delivering analyses across more than 24 million patients’ full pseudonymised primary care NHS records, with more to follow shortly. Their analytic software is open for security review, scientific review, and re-use.

3D-printed isolation wards

In the battle against the coronavirus, timely isolation has become the top priority for epidemic prevention and control. Adequate isolation wards can not only concentrate and isolate patients diagnosed with infection and suspected patients, effectively prevent the spread of the epidemic, but also provide patients with a more professional and comfortable treatment environment, which will help their early recovery.

#DontGoViral Campaign

The COVID-19 pandemic is accompanied by an Infodemic, a spread of disinformation and misinformation making it difficult for people to find accurate information. To contribute to tackling this issue, UNESCO, in partnership with the Innovation for Policy Foundation (i4Policy), is launching an online campaign to crowdsource local openly licensed content to inform communities across Africa about COVID-19. The #DontGoViral campaign is designed to activate artists and cultural entrepreneurs across Africa.

Folding@home

Folding@home is a distributed computing project for simulating protein dynamics, including the process of protein folding and the movements of proteins implicated in a variety of diseases. It brings together citizen scientists who volunteer to run simulations of protein dynamics on their personal computers. Insights from this data are helping scientists to better understand biology, and providing new opportunities for developing therapeutics.

Monitoring Hospital Waiting Times

All across the world, hospitals have been inundated with COVID patients, pushing aside other patients or treatments deemed nonessential, and increasing wait times for people that need medical attention for other reasons. To make matters worse, some medical facilities have been forced to close, limiting the options available and further exacerbating wait times.
