Smart Grid

This intelligent electricity network (Smart Grid) contains additional computers and sensors placed in the grid. As such current and voltage are monitored continuously to provide more accurate monitoring and control functions. In the past these functions weren’t available at this level.

Energy Atlas

The city of Amsterdam expects the Energy Atlas to stimulate the use of renewable energy, as citizens will become more aware of their own energy usage and realise that there are gains to be made. Companies will be able to determine their own usage and that of others and find out where renewable sources of energy and the energy infrastructure are located. The Energy Atlas is one of the instruments Amsterdam can utilize to advance the transition to a system of renewable energy (the Energy Transition).

Energy masterplan

The smart energy masterplanning tool makes innovative use of GIS technology to analyse the geospatial inter-relationships between energy demand density, development implementation programmes, physical constraints and cost information.

Urban solar potential map

The project aims to study the sun power over whole cities, creating databases and mapping the results. Databases offer an overview about the sun irradiation conditions, photovoltaic production and Co2 emissions saved. Data are interpreted by a specific viewer software which allows navigate over irradiation maps, get information in points, selected areas or the whole city.

District heating and cooling in Houthaven District

Houthaven is a 100% climate neutral district under construction. For the climate control in livings, the Houthaven chose for the combination of city heat and comfort cooling from surface water. The entire energy demand in the Houthaven is being generated sustainable. To achieve this, they build on the principle of the ‘trias energetica’: this leads to a promising package of energy saving and sustainability measures. The livings will get a sustainable casco, and for the heating the Houthaven will be connected to the city-heating network.

Helsinki Street Lab

Helsinki Street Lab is a blog about smart pilots and user interfaces linked to wayfinding, digital screens, and urban apps in Helsinki and around the world. The content is published and updated by Forum Virium Helsinki, an innovation unit within the Helsinki City organization. We play a key role in implementing Helsinki’s Smart and Open City strategy, by developing building blocks for smart and open cities of the future. The City of Helsinki and Forum Virium Helsinki have together created and piloted digital wayfinding, signage as well as interactive services for a few years now.

Lyon Smart Community

The project is based on four separate parts: the first being the construction of Hikari, a block of energy positive housing and office buildings. Secondly, there will be a deployment of a shared group of electric vehicles to be fueled primarily by energy produced from photovoltaic panels installed on the tops of certain buildings. Thirdly, the distribution of ConsoTab, a tablet allowing for the viewing of residential energy consumption, and finally the implementation of this monitoring tool which tracks energy production and consumption for the entire La Confluence neighborhood.

MOTI (Mayor's Office of Technology and Innovation – New York City)

The Mayor's Office of Technology and Innovation is led by New York City's first-ever Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Minerva Tantoco, who was appointed by Mayor de Blasio to drive citywide technology strategy. Under her leadership, the office facilitates citywide coordination and collaboration on technology issues, serves as a catalyst for and advises agencies on innovation, and interacts with the wider New York City technology ecosystem. The office's mission is to fulfill Mayor de Blasio's vision of making NYC the most innovative, tech-friendly, and equitable big city in the world.

Amsterdam Smart City

Amsterdam Smart City (ASC) is the innovation platform of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area which is constantly challenging businesses, residents, the municipality and knowledge institutions to test innovative ideas & solutions for urban issues.
