Gasometer

One of the most successful residential reuse projects is Gasometer City, in Vienna Austria. Four immense disused gasometers were successfully revamped in the late ‘90s and have since become infamous in the world of adaptive reuse.

Built in 1896, when Viennese authorities decided to invest in large-scale coal gas and electricity supplies, the gas plant serviced the locale and beyond for a good 88 years, until it was shut down permanently in 1984 after natural gas supplies took over

Sponge garden

The climate is changing: the rain is heavier and the dry periods between are lasting longer. How can we moderate these two extremes? A lot of rain water currently drains through sewers to prevent flooding. However, that does not always work and increases the problem of drought.

One way to deal with this; is to have our urban greenery function like a sponge. A sponge can moderate these extremes; it can absorb water quickly, hold it temporarily and gradually return the water to the subsoil.

Stormwater Square

In 2013, the first rainwater storage square was completed in Benthemsquare, which serves a dual function of storing water and improving the quality of public spaces in the city. The water storage facilities have been made attractive and enjoyable to use, so that not only the capital and energy invested is visible, but the creative approach is also a forward-looking example. The project provide an opportunity to create environmental quality and identity in the central squares of other neighbourhoods. The rainwater square is used as a recreational area most of the time.

911 Project – Predicting Hotspots for Accidents

Traffic volume, geographic centrality and unique relief have led to an increase in traffic accidents and fatalities every year since 2015. The Chattanooga Smart Community Collaborative (CCSC), launched the ’911 Project – Predicting Hotspots for Accidents’ in early 2018. It uses machine learning, specifically multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network models, to analyse both historic and current 911 data to identify accident trends. This dataset is cross-referenced with DarkSky weather data, roadway geometric data and accident time, date, geographical coordinates.

VoloPort

The integration of flexible take-off and landing infrastructure in megacities is crucial for the success of Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and for air taxi operations. In order to advance the development of this infrastructure, they have been working with Skyports, a British vertiport developer and operator, since 2019. They developed the VoloPort, which we will show for the first time publicly in Singapore.

Perth – Trees in the City

This dataset contains current tree data for the City of Perth and contains information regarding the Botanical name, Common Name and Family. Data is compiled from field capture from a parks team. This is not a complete comprehensive inventory of all trees as trees in the private realm are excluded. Some errors and/or duplicate data may exist.

Roerplein Pocket Park

As part of the NATURVATION project, Utrecht has been examining nature-based solutions projects in the city. The Roerplein Pocket Park is one of our best examples of a successful citizen-led intervention, and began as an initiative by a local social entrepreneur to turn a paved public square into a park. The small park was built within a highly paved neighborhood with little green space, and is managed by local citizens with the support of the municipality.
