Stormwater Square

In 2013, the first rainwater storage square was completed in Benthemsquare, which serves a dual function of storing water and improving the quality of public spaces in the city. The water storage facilities have been made attractive and enjoyable to use, so that not only the capital and energy invested is visible, but the creative approach is also a forward-looking example. The project provide an opportunity to create environmental quality and identity in the central squares of other neighbourhoods. The rainwater square is used as a recreational area most of the time.

Belfast Urban Childhoods Masterplan

With 35% of Belfast’s population aged 25 or under, Belfast City Council recognised the need to design for the youngest in the population and place them at the heart of city planning. With support from the Resilient Cities Network (R-Cities), and working closely with Belfast City Council, Arup developed a framework and design strategy (Belfast Urban Childhoods Masterplan) that creates a more healthy, inclusive and child-friendly city centre in Belfast.

The Red Ribbon Park

Against a background of natural terrain and vegetation, is a “red ribbon” spanning five hundred meters, which integrates the functions of lighting, seating, environmental interpretation, and orientation. While preserving as much of the natural river corridor as possible during the process of urbanization, this project demonstrates how a minimal design solution can achieve a dramatic improvement to the landscape.

BeePathNet - Urban apiary (Hegyvidék)

Under the BeePathNet project, 5 European cities will learn from the Slovenian capital the holistic approach to urban beekeeping developed and successfully implemented by Llubjana. The project aims to establish and develop sustainable urban beekeeping.

The Bee Friendly Network was created to serve a more sustainable, liveable urban environment and local development while preserving natural resources and biodiversity.

Prefab house renewal in Rimaszombat

Slovakia is home to more Cold War-era prefabricated housing blocks, locally referred to as “panelaks,” than anywhere else in the former Soviet bloc. After the fall of communism, many called for the demolition of the panelaks, seen as unwanted reminders of a difficult history. In Bratislava alone, 130,000 people live in panelaks; destroying and replacing that much housing would have been prohibitively expensive.

911 Project – Predicting Hotspots for Accidents

Traffic volume, geographic centrality and unique relief have led to an increase in traffic accidents and fatalities every year since 2015. The Chattanooga Smart Community Collaborative (CCSC), launched the ’911 Project – Predicting Hotspots for Accidents’ in early 2018. It uses machine learning, specifically multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network models, to analyse both historic and current 911 data to identify accident trends. This dataset is cross-referenced with DarkSky weather data, roadway geometric data and accident time, date, geographical coordinates.

Aquastar

Aquastar is Cary's and Morrisville's innovative meter infrastructure system that replaced monthly manual meter reads with a wireless system that collects multiple remote meter reads per day. The Town replaced about 60,000 residential and commercial water meters (including irrigation meters) in Cary and Morrisville with new, state-of-the-art meters. The water meters contain a transmitter that communicates usage and data via wireless technology directly to the Town.

Opioid Wastewater Sampling

The abuse of opioids is affecting communities throughout the american nation including Cary. The town is committed to offering solutions to of opioid misuse. The Town is planning to pilot a wastewater monitoring project that would generate opioid consumption data by measuring concentrations of opioid metabolites in sewage. The Town is working with Biobot Analytics, a company that provides opioid testing and data analytics services. Town staff will install and operate wastewater sampling devices, or robots, within the sewer system.
